Claude Now Reads 1 Million Tokens AI Coding Will Never Be the Same

The ceiling just broke. Claude has released a new 1 million token context window. For the first time, an AI can read an entire code base, a full book, or a year of chat history in one sitting. Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, posted on X that Codex was coming back. He said he had been editing code on his phone for ten days straight.

No one expected that on the same day, Anthropic would drop a bomb.

Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 now support 1 million tokens of context. It is live for everyone.

No beta. No waitlist. No special header needed.

What does Claude’s 1 million token context window actually mean?

From now on, you can feed an entire code base into the prompt. You can add research papers, datasets, long chat histories, legal documents, and design files all at the same time. Nothing gets lost.

In the new pricing, Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 both support 1 million token context at the same price. No extra fees. No beta header needed.

Opus 4.6 costs 5 dollars per million input tokens and 25 dollars per million output tokens. Sonnet 4.6 costs 3 dollars and 15 dollars. Same price as before.

In the previous beta stage, 1 million token context cost 1.5 times more. Many teams only used it for special cases.

Now, with the same price, long context has become the default. It is no longer a luxury.

Compared to text, Claude has also expanded its multimodal ability.

The new model supports 600 images or 600 pages of PDF at once. That is 6 times more than the previous 100 media file limit.

Under the new context window, the change for Claude Code users is direct and immediate.

For all Max, Team, and Enterprise users on Opus 4.6, chat history is no longer compressed or cut. Everything stays.

The key point is that long document handling is no longer forced to compress.

In the past, when users uploaded large PDFs, datasets, and image systems, the model had to compress or drop content. Now, with 1 million tokens, everything fits.

Anthropic has reduced compression rates by 15 percent.

AI programming war enters total war

Claude’s 1 million token release is not just a tech upgrade. It is a declaration of total war in the AI programming space.

There is no doubt that AI programming is the next trillion-dollar market. And OpenAI is chasing from behind.

The game has changed again.

OpenAI launched the Codex project in 2021. Brockman said at the time that they would build a system that could read the entire Linux kernel.

But after ChatGPT exploded in 2022 with 100 million users in one month, the Codex team was disbanded.

For the next two years, OpenAI had no dedicated AI programming product.

In those two years, Anthropic ran ahead and built a massive lead.

By the numbers:

Claude Code annual revenue exceeds 2.5 billion dollars. Codex, which just launched in January 2026, is at 1 billion.

In September 2025, Codex usage was only 5 percent of Claude Code. By January 2026, it reached 40 percent.

The chase is fast, but the gap is still huge.

OpenAI is also trying to buy the AI programming startup Windsurf for 3 billion dollars, but the deal fell through due to regulatory issues.

100 engineers spent 4 hours fully using Codex in a demo. The result was that users completed tasks in one day that used to take a week.

Cognition founder Adhyyan Sekhsaria said it bluntly:

“Before 1 million tokens, we had to manually split files and manage context. Cross-file dependencies failed constantly.”

Anton Biryukov, engineer at fintech platform Ramp, described a painful debugging moment:

“After 1 million tokens, we threw the full logs in. Claude traced the error across service boundaries, found the root cause, and fixed it. All in one pass.”

Bardia Pourvakil, CTO at legal AI platform GC AI, was more direct:

“Our lawyers used to split 100-page contracts into pieces and feed them line by line. Now we throw the whole contract in at once. Claude finds the conflicts between different versions in one go.”

Hex, a data platform, had the most extreme case. They used Opus with 200K context before. Between 200K and 500K, there was almost no difference. But at 1 million tokens, “something magical happened.”

From wild experiments to real efficiency, AI programming no longer needs humans to split files and manage context. One shot. One pass. Done.

The role of the programmer is being rewritten

Brockman’s return is the best footnote to this war.

He once said that programmers need to learn to write code that cannot be written. They need to focus on architecture, not details.

Now, that turn has arrived. When a tool can read an entire aircraft carrier of code at once, the CEO no longer needs to ask “how many lines did you write today.”

The new question is: “What did you make the AI do today?”

The market has already voted with money.

Wall Street Journal reported that a tech fund with 1 billion dollars under management is fully betting on Claude Code.

Anthropic officially announced a partnership with IBM to modernize COBOL systems. IBM welcomed 25,000 new developers in one day.

Behind the numbers, AI programming is no longer just a toy. It is rewriting how work gets done.
